Why does Turkey not withdraw its troops from Cyprus?
First of all, I know the history of the island, and do believe Turkey's intervention to the island was legal, but an occupying force cannot enforce a policy to change the demographic composition of occupied territory, so Turkey was wrong about sending its own citizens to the island. That violates Turkey's obligations under international law. Also, I do not think Greek Cypriots will try to subject the Turkish Cypriots to an ethnic cleansing any more, and many real Cypriot Turks do not want Turkish troops in the island any more too.So, is there really a justified and legal reason for Turkey to maintain its troops in the island any more?BBurak, do you really think a member of the EU will try to apply ethnic cleansing to the Turkish Cypriots in 2012? The North Cyprus is not an independent country, and Turkey cannot divide the country and claim it is legal because of Turkey's guarantorship status in the island. Turkey could and did intervene to prevent some events from taking place, and that's legal, but trying to divide the country and declaring a phony state is not.BBRuak, the Treaty of Guarantee does not give Turkey the right to divide the country and declare a state over there. Turkey always claim the intervention was legal under the treaty to save the Turkish Cypriots, but sending its own citizens there or establishing a so called state has nothing to do with the treaty, and violates not only the Treaty of Guarantee, but also international law.A Owl, do not make me talk about what the human rights were like in Turkey 20 years ago, in 90s.
